Today’s Objective
Complete the foundational network blocks of the AWS training and execute the rewrite of my master resume.
What I Worked On
I spent 5 hours on intensive AWS training focusing on VPC configuration, IAM security boundaries, and high-availability database setups. The remaining 3 hours were dedicated to rebuilding my resume from scratch, shifting the narrative from a chronological list of duties to a value-focused Solutions Engineering showcase.
What I Learned
- Resume Metrics Matter: In Solutions Engineering, technical skills are assumed; business outcomes are scrutinized. Instead of writing “Responsible for maintaining financial software,” I reframed it to: “Managed technical production support for core financial systems handling $X million daily, reducing system downtime by 15% through proactive root-cause analysis.”
- The Power of Pre-Existing Knowledge: My 11 years of software development and operations make cloud training move significantly faster. Concepts like load balancing, database scaling, and network subnets aren’t new to me—I just need to learn the specific AWS vocabulary and service names (EC2, RDS, Route 53).
Skills Acquired
- AWS Core Infrastructure (VPC & IAM):
- What it is: Designing isolated Virtual Private Clouds (VPC), configuring public/private subnets, internet gateways, and establishing strict Identity and Access Management (IAM) role boundaries.
- Why I decided to learn: 24 out of 30 target job descriptions required foundational cloud architecture validation. I have to prove I can map a client’s legacy network securely to a cloud environment.
- Further delve required?: Yes. I understand the theory, but I need to build a multi-tier VPC manually in the AWS console next week to ensure I can talk through it fluidly in an interview.
- Material used: Ultimate AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate by Stephane Maarek (Udemy).
- Metric-Driven Resume Architecture (XYZ Formula):
- What it is: The framework of framing accomplishments as: “Accomplished [X], as measured by [Y], by doing [Z].”
- Why I decided to learn: To break out of the “generalist trap.” My old resume listed tasks; Solutions Engineering requires demonstrating business value and risk mitigation.
- Further delve required?: No, the core format is set, but it will require specific iterations based on feedback.
- Material used: Google’s internal XYZ resume writing guide and active SE job description keywords.
The Redesigned Positioning Statement: 11-year Technical Professional combining software development foundations, deep financial systems troubleshooting, and client-facing product ownership to bridge the gap between complex enterprise technology and business value.
Market Observations
Several recent mid-2026 tech layoff rounds mean the market has an influx of general developers. However, the specialized pocket of technical people who can comfortably speak to clients and executives remains uncrowded. Double down on the human element.

Reflection
Rebuilding a resume at 41 after a layoff forces a lot of introspection. It is easy to feel washed up when the headlines talk about young AI prodigies. But looking at my new resume layout, I see 11 years of hard-earned problem-solving. That has real market value. I just need to get it in front of the right eyes.
